Petrinex Authentication Changes Project

Key Terms

TermDescription
AuthenticationVerifies identity (e.g., “Who are you?"). Petrinex currently uses Jurisdiction + BA + User ID + Password.  The new authentication process will rely on the user's e-mail address.
AuthorizationDetermines access rights (e.g., “What are you allowed to do?"). Managed by the BA User Security Administrator (USA).
Identity Provider (IdP)System that authenticates users and issues security tokens.
User PrincipalA human user performing interactive tasks (e.g., edit, query, report requests).
Service PrincipalAn application or automated service performing server-to-server tasks.

What is changing?

Petrinex is updating its authentication process.

Beginning on October 2, 2025, users will be able to sign in using existing identity providers instead of Petrinex-managed credentials. Petrinex will use the e-mail address configured by Petrinex User Security Administrators (USA) to identify and match user accounts.

With the new system, users can easily switch between accounts associated with their e-mail address using a new “Switch Accounts" screen.

This change means fewer usernames and passwords for users to manage, resulting in a simpler and more secure login experience.

When is this change come into effect?

Starting October 2, 2025, Petrinex will display new sign in links that allow users to authenticate using modern identity providers. Users are encouraged to begin using these new authentication options as soon as they become available. More information will be made available to this project page as we continue through this change process.

The current sign in method—using Jurisdiction, BAID, User ID, and Password—will remain available until February 4, 2026. This transition period is designed to give AB, BC, SK and MB ndustry end-users time to configure their Alberta Account for Organizations setups.

There are no changes to the user-facing authorization features in Petrinex, nor to how company USAs assign roles to accounts.

Why is this changing?

This transition aligns with a broader directive from Government of Alberta (GOA) Cybersecurity, which aims to unify identity management across Alberta's online services. By adopting a modern authentication approach, Petrinex is supporting this initiative and enhancing security for all stakeholders.

Help and support

A communication strategy is being developed to help industry USAs prepare their Business Associate (BA) users for the upcoming authentication process.

This information page will be updated regularly with new details, key dates, and progress tracking as we approach the October 2, 2025 launch.
